BUTTERNUT BONE-HEADS

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

If this post were about food storage I would share how happy our family is to be enjoying the butternut squash we so successfully grew in the garden. But it didn’t quite turn out the way we planned.

Tonight I picked the one and only butternut squash. Such a treasure. Actual size.

Do I save it? Do I bake it? Do I call the American Girls company?

This post is about my efforts to be a “more-fun-mom” and embrace the Halloween spirit.

So far I’ve planned a special family dinner and asked everyone to wear costumes. Lizzie and I are going to serve crescent mummy dogs (thanks to Pillsbury) oooooozing slimy green pickle relish. I’ve already made the fabo wheat chili and we’ll add the body parts and pieces (plastic fingers, teeth, and eyeballs) to each individual bowl. Pears, pecans, and poppy seed spinach salad will be on the side and crawling with lots of little black spiders. Last, and possibly best of all the game, will be our creepy creation, roasted butternut bone-heads:

With heads added after they’re cooked, we plan to slather them in melted butter and brown sugar goo.

(Remind me one more time…what is it we’re celebrating?)
