EASTER BONNETS REINVENTED

With endless thanks to the hundreds of women and girls that helped with this service project, the Stake Relief Society President and I delivered 200 chemo caps and about 150 skinny scarves to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

And yes, they do want more of these so please email me your full name and address if you would like to be mailed a copy of the beanie pattern with sewing instructions. I’m sure there are hospitals in your area that would appreciate being able to offer their cancer patients a hip alternative to the traditional turban.

We also completed about 150 original skinny scarves to tie around the caps.

If you need a fun Achievement Day activity, or YW’s Personal Progress goal, or Additional Meeting in Relief Society, I highly suggest making these. They’re a great way to teach the most basic sewing skills and celebrate creativity. Eye candy for sure. Here’s just a sample to wet your whistle.

Wow, that is amazing! They look great. I am finally starting on mine- thanks for sending me the pattern. I found nice, lightweight knit at Walmart for $2 a yard.
And you are right, love can heal!

  2. Liesa Says:

Great price on the fabric Jennifer! We had to pay more than that in order to find knits with enough stretch. Let me know how they work up for you. xo

    Hi Liesa!

I am organizing a service project for the Utah Valley Quilt Guild this fall and this would be perfect! I would love it if you could share the pattern with us. Your contact info at the cancer center would be great too! Thanks!

  4. Liesa Says:

Sounds like a terrific plan Jessica. Please send me your mailing address and I’ll get a pattern with instructions in the mail.
    Thank you!

    Hi Liesa!

I just stumbled upon your website and saw the tender caps and skinny scarves….I am going through chemo-therapy right now and would love to give back to the cancer clinic I frequent. I haven’t seen the skinny scarves before, can you tell me how they work? Also any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Trinette Says:

…..May I just add that the scarves are truly amazing!! Each one a work of art…and love!!

  9. Liesa Says:

Thank you Trinette! I would be happy to email you the pattern for the hats. They sew together in no time at all. Check out the post titled CHEMO CAPS AND SKINNY SCARVES, dated February 21st. The scarf ties around the hat to give it individuality, art, and fashion. It’s sort of a modern flapper look…and…it can even be used AFTER all the treatments! It’s a happy goal. You’re in my heart and prayers. Please get better!

I would love to get the patterns if possible. My dtr of 8 has been growing her hair for past 2 years for Locks of Love. We are on track to cut it off for a Christmas gift this coming year to Locks of Love. We have asked other girls at school to consider doing the same. But since not all girls wear long hair, or might not want to cut it off, we decided we would do chemo caps for kids too. This way we could involve all who want to be a part of this gift . (And include the boys too) . Might I be sent the pattern? I am researching hospitals in my area Oregon for this cause. Thank you in advance. Karla. Mom of 2.

Dear Lord, I do not ask that Thou shouldst give me some high work of thine, some noble calling or some wonderous task. Just a little hand to hold in mine.

  11. Liesa Says:

I’ve emailed you the pattern and instructions, Karla. You’re doing great stuff with your children, and beyond. Bless you!

Hi, I’m a breast cancer survivor for 19 years now and would love to sew these caps and donate them to my local hospital. Could you send me the pattern? Thanks, Marilyn

  14. Liesa Says:

Congratulations Marilyn! You’re an example of someone who wants to give, and give back. Please type “chemo caps pattern & instructions” in my search box in the upper right hand corner, and print out your own copy of the pattern and sewing information. Then, type “chemo caps and skinny scarves” for pictures of the the sewing construction. Please let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for the service you’re giving. Please take care!

  15. Marilyn Rhodes Says:

Hi again, I printed out the pattern like you said and sewed one cap. Unfortunately it came out the size that would fit a doll head. I don’t know if I did something wrong but when I printed out the pattern it didn’t look big enough to me but I thought oh well, I’ll give it a try anyway. The pattern piece measures 6 inches from the fold line to the cutting edge and about 10 1/2 edges from point to point. Now I don’t know what to do. Could you give me the measurements? Thanks Marilyn

  16. Liesa Says:

I’m so sorry Marilyn! I haven’t heard of that happening in the past. Not sure what the problem must be. Maybe your printer hates my printer. Send me a private email with your mailing address and I’ll mail you a pattern. Be sure to give that custom made doll hat to your hospital. I bet there’s a little girl in treatment that would love it!
    Tender mercy~ Liesa
