CITRUS STEAM
Does everyone already know this trick? (I’m usually a bit late to the homemaking party.)
It’s sad to admit…but once again…my microwave looks freakishly similar to the one at the nasty truck stop. (No offense to truck stops.) But do you know what I mean? It’s the microwave that makes you loose your appetite the minute the door is opened. H-yeah. I don’t know WHY I can’t get the family to just cover their food when they want to warm something…but they won’t.
So I’ve been a little ill, with something not related to the gross microwave problem, and decided that the only housework I was really up for was an experiment involving grapefruit peelings. This may be the antihistamine talking.

First, I put grapefruit peelings in a bowl with water and then popped it into the microwave. Then, I set the timer for 7 minutes and just let the water and peelings cook and steam-clean, on full power, while I enjoyed a nice bowl of vitamin C. When it was finished, I left the door closed, and let the citrus steam work its magic for about 5 more minutes. When I opened the door all that needed to be done was to wipe out the stinky little splatters that had decorated the inside of the oven. It was simple and required zero scrubbing!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Why can’t all housework be this easy???

I’ve used this wonderful tip with lemon peel. Works great and smells wonderful!
My rule is: You cover what you microwave or you don’t get to use the microwave…simple as that. Oldest son seems to constantly be unable to use the microwave. Sigh. At this point…I don’t think there is any hope that he is teachable.:) I just hope his future wife will not blame me…
Hope you’re feeling better. Seasonal allergies are my biggest issue at this time of year. I sneeze and itch from May-September.

I had no idea! I’ve been ‘boiling’ vinegar in a bowl to get the same effect, but this smells better I’m sure!

Oh Amanda, you have to try this. I’ve used vinegar on my wood floors…like twice. Just can’t take the smell! I’m sure any type of citrus peelings will work and it smells great.

Thank you Joyce. I’ve got some sort of death-cough. And I thought I was so smart making it all the way through winter without catching anything. Dang.
I hope you’ll feel better too!

Liesa, I totally agree about the smell of vinegar. My MIL uses vinegar to clean her kitchen floor all the time. To me…it smells like the floor was rubbed with pickle juice! Eww!

I just get a rag really wet with hot soapy water and put it in for 30 seconds and it does the trick – I bet this smells yummier though!
