THE SECRET
The SECRET in designing a food storage you would actually want to eat is that it lasts…and lasts…and lasts!
(Hold onto your giblets.)
I put together our most recent three-month supply of food storage in November of 2007!!! Back then our cupboards were completely stocked with all the ingredients that could be stored, in neat little groups of three, for 30 recipes. (30 recipes x 3 = 3 month supply) And, I’m still working my way through it! Let’s see, that’s, 17 months…and I bet there’s at least another 3 months before I’ve fully depleted my stock.
It’s like the cupboards are magic! I cook from my food storage all the time and we really don’t eat out very often. I know that I’m super careful about leftovers and freeze individual portions for later use, but still, it just doesn’t add up. There honestly is some kind of food storage blessing that must be connected to the preparation. The three-month supply is lasting way longer than I expected.
I’ve always believed that the Lord has the power to stretch food in an emergency, but I certainly didn’t expect that on a day-to-day basis.
I wish I knew how much money I’ve saved because I chose to invest in food storage.
Tell a friend.

Today with my sixteen year old son home for spring break we tackled the food storage room. We took all the boxes of #10 cans and put them in order like in your book. It was amazing to see just how much we did and didn’t have. We also have several of the white 5 or so gallon buckets with items that we use on a ver regular basis that we added to the total. I think in the future I’m just going to stick with the #10 cans to simplify things. Next up, really putting items together for the 3 month program. They are all there, just not neatly grouped. Thanks Liesa for all the love you have put into your book.

The eight year old was sad that I didn’t include him on the blog. He was also a big help! Sorry Brandon!

I am convinced of it as well. However, the miracle of the loaves and fishes, as well as the widow’s flour and oil is that your heart is in it. Not just that it stretches, but that you have truly consecrated your heart and mind to being obedient. What did you sacrifice? Convenience foods and eating out. What did you gain? Better health, skills and the cup running over.

Oh. A Post Script. I have found that not only does our food stretch when we use our storage, but when we have a need to replenish our supply, the means and the product is there.

Cool Kris! Nothing says Spring Break like reorganizing the storage room. It shows you have two terrific young men in your home. I’m a big fan of the #10 size cans in their neat little cases of 6. It just makes for such a compact and modular storage system, plus the individual cans fit nicely in the kitchen cupboards. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the book! xoxo

Carolyn, I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I was afraid I sounded nuts. We can’t both be nuts. My testimony is that the blessings of food storage are in no way limited to emergencies or disaster. It’s a way of life that has all sorts of rewards and advantages. Thanks for standing up with me.

Same here. Well, almost. I am not LDS, so a lot of the food storage as it relates to #10 cans of wheat and beans is new to me. I’m just a silly farm girl who loves home canning and drying fruit! But thanks to you and some local LDS friends who have helped me understand what food storage is really about, we have some #10 cans (and big buckets, too!) of our own.
I see the same thing with my pantry, though. I put up green beans, applesauce, some ready-to-eat things like soups and stews, relishes, pickles, etc. etc. I put up enough for the year, and extra if I have it. We eat from the pantry ALL the time. I mean, every single meal we eat is bread from the pantry wheat, or oats from the bucket, veggies and fruits that we canned and dried…so right now, with spring here, I should have a fairly empty pantry, right?
It’s full. Ridiculously so. The shelves are packed. My freezer is the same – I almost have to sit on the lid to get it closed! And compared to many of our friends and acquaintances, we spend next to nothing, eat better, and we have an abundance to share if someone hits on hard times.
Thank you, dearie!

Laura! Can I come live with you? Can I bring my daughters? Can I bring my sisters? Can I bring my friends? Can I, can I, can I???
I wish I knew one tenth of what you already know. You are a rock star in my book and I love what you have to share, in all ways!

I couldnt agree more Liesa, and everyone. I have learned so much more about the way the gosple works because I have chosen to follow the council and get my food storage in order. I realized that this isnt something you check off you list of things to do. It;s a lifestyle. And i love this way of life! And I have saved over 600 dollars a month by utilizing my food storage. WOW!!

WOW Amie! That’s wonderful! Funny how we want to believe in, understand, and appreciate gospel teachings BEFORE we actually live them. Testimonies come AFTER obedience. I learn to love the principles of provident living as I live them, and part of that love seems to grow out of the sacrifice and changes I’m willing to make. Your success is a wonderful example!

I was very happy to meet you at Costco on Friday. I applaud you for the hard work you have done to bring Food Storage info. to the world. I am amazed at your statistics. I always knew that if you made a menu and then shopped for those items your grocery bill was less but this info. of yours is amazing. I can’t wait to put your whole plan into effect–I think I’m on chapter five. Thanks so much and for letting me tell the sisters in my ward about your book and share things from it. You rock. And, hey, you are pretty darn beautiful, besides.

Lyyyyyyyyyyynnnnnnnneeeee! So good to meet YOU and thank you for the lovely compliment! Really. At 46 I’m wearing so much makeup I worry that I look like I’m working for Disney.
Please share any ideas you think would be helpful. I hope you discover all sorts of wonderful secrets that come from using your food storage. Thanks again!
