SMALL GROUPS, MAKING A DIFFERENCE

I’m completely impressed and encouraged by the emails that come into this website. All over the country there are Relief Society sisters who are working hard, strengthening the women in their community and teaching new skills. Instead of indulging in panic or hanging out in denial, great women are investing in changing themselves! Here’s an example of one ward that’s focused on “Increasing Sisterhood and Self Reliance”.

Dear Liesa,
As a result of your endless inspiration relating to food storage, I determined to take that and somehow put it to good use in our ward in a ’small group’ setting. So, we introduced the idea that we were starting a ‘book club’ in which we’ll be reading I Dare you to eat it . I wanted to use this as a springboard to get the sisters thinking and talking about food storage and hopefully more excited about working on their own food storage. Then we’ll be adding some cooking classes and trips to places like the cannery and any other outlets around town where we can purchase in bulk and at low prices. I’m hoping to keep this going all year long as we experiment with different recipes and try new things all year long.
Thanks Liesa for your inspiration.

Well, guess what? I still have lots to learn, and as soon as possible, in order to be better prepared.

*Square foot gardening!!!

*Cooking dried beans in pressure cookers and bottling for storage

*Best ways to find online coupons and store discounts for three-month supply grocery items

*Alternate cooking sources

My Stake Relief Society President, Laurie Little, shared a beautiful quote from Lucy Mack Smith:

“We must cherish one another, watch over one another, comfort one another and gain instruction, that we may all sit down in heaven together.”

I think Lucy Mack Smith understood the potential of small groups.

Oh man, I hope you make some posts on squarefoot gardening and canning dried beans in the pressure canner.

I am doing my first year of SFG (not my first time gardening though) and am hoping it works out the way I want it to. As for the Bean canning, I saw one tutorial online that looked really simple. I am just waiting for canning season (Fall) so I can buy my own pressure canner and try it myself.

Thanks for all the great tips!

Oh no Rebecca! I thought you were going to teach me! I’m just starting out in those areas but I’ll be happy to share whatever I find along the way. Thanks for your comment!
