MOVIE TRIVIA
I admit that I’m not an easy customer. I don’t want anything that wastes my time or my money. Most of all, I don’t want anything that pushes lies or trash on me, or my daughters.
It deeply saddens and concerns me when there is so much enthusiasm for stories about relationships based on love so intense, it’s dangerous, and at its deepest level has the power to consume the individual. I don’t believe that and I don’t support anything that shovels dramatic images of artfully mixed romance with violence. I get that it’s “exciting” and only “fantasy”, but when it comes to relationships, those two qualities are dead ends. That’s the last thing I want for my daughters. And why the double standard for women? Is it really only dangerous for men to be dabbling in entertainment relationships that are ”exciting” and only “fantasy”?
Last weekend, my great friend, Stephanie, suggested a movie she recently discovered on Netflix. It’s called SWEET LAND and we rented it from Blockbuster. One of the reviews said, “Sweet Land is a movie of extraordinary tenderness.” –Owen Glieberman, Entertainment Weekly
What mattered to me was that Stephanie, a women with a brain, clarity, and a tender heart, said it was a great movie and something the whole family could enjoy. (When does that happen anymore?)
But this movie is really different. This movie is wonderful. Without spoiling it for anyone, I would describe it as a love story that celebrates the POTENTIAL of two people united and working together. (Food and common ground are also part of the drama.) This is a beautiful story about accomplishing miracles together, touching lives, and effecting change in people. Sweet Land is a story about love that has the power to expand and improve everything it touches.
That’s what I believe in.
Most of all, I loved how this movie illustrates that true love grows out of sacrifice and shared experience. Stephanie’s next suggestion is a documentary called Wild Parrots Of Telegraph Hill. With a name that good it has to be winner!
