Hey GoogleGirl! Check out the suggestions above, from Danila, 2-16-09. She mentioned that her Vet suggested getting the dog acclimated to rice so that in an emergency they would be able to have that basic grain added to their dog food, extending their supply.

Hey there, I was looking at options for storing dog food for a long time. (A Mormon Issue). Have you come across anything?

I have a book written by Barbara Salsbury called Preparedness Principles and this is what she suggests.
“you can prepare your dogs for hard times…if you ar no longer able to obtain dog frood for your pet, rice can come to the rescue….I checked with our veterinarian and he agreed rice will not hurt them, and it would be a good thing in difficult times, if they are acclimated to rice” She suggests adding a little bit of rice to their food now so that they can get use to eating it.

We have purchased bags of dog food for our 3 dogs, by estimating how much they go through in a months time and multiplying that by 12 months, then if times get hard we will add rice to their food to make the food last longer.

That is hillarious! A little dog expressing his Machimo! Tell me the truth, does he have a little bit of a drinking problem?

Archie is going to be a challenge. He won’t even eat his dog food out of a bucket or off the floor. He just stares at his bowl with a look like, “I can wait for you rude people to figure this out.” So far, the only people food he will eat is cheese and peanut butter. Nothing else. Nothing. Maybe in an emergency, he could learn to love rice and beans laced with peanut butter. Let’s not tell the Vet.

I have no idea how good it was for his diet but my dad had a smaller type dog that LOVED bean burritos and popcorn and could shell his own peanuts. Kinda weird but that was his diet, no dog food for him.
